Certified Nursing Assistant Easy and Fun Tutorial Part Twenty-Five
***********Taking a patient's height and weight
This is taken from Lippincott's Video Series for Nursing Assistants.
The nursing home will measure the height and weight of a person upon admission to determine drug dosages.
Before you take the height and weight of a person you must offer them a chance to urinate and then you make sure that they have on roughly the same amount of clothing and that you take the height and weight at the same time of the day.
Once you have the patient on the doctor's scale you move the weights to the left of the bar. You don't let them hold onto the scale but you move the weights until the balance point is centered.
Then you slide the height scale up so that you read the number at the point where the height rod meets the head. This is the height of the person in inches.
To weigh a person there is a chair scale that you roll the wheelchair onto the platform and then lock the wheels and then read the weight on the scale and then unlock the chair's wheels and weigh the empty wheelchair.
So you must weigh the wheelchair with the person in it and without the person in it and then subtract the difference to get the weight of the person.
You would always confirm good body alignment and then leave the call light. Return the bed to its lowest position and make sure that the wheels are locked for safety.
Ask if the person would like to have his visitors return and then bring the visitors back.
*********Hormones
Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is usually under age 30
Type 2 Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is usually after age 40
Adrenal cortex the cortex part sounds like a shell. Mineralcorticoids are sodium and potassium. Glucocorticoids and adrenal sex hormones are all in the adrenal cortex.
The adrenal medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine to increase the heart rate and increase the force of the contraction (of the heart.)
Glucocorticoids affect the metabolism of the sugar glucose. The chief glucocorticoid is cortisol. Prednisone is a glucocorticoid drug that inhibits the inflammatory response from the immune system.
Adrenal sex hormones are androgens like testosterone. Also estrogen and progesterone are adrenal sex hormones but there is more estrogen and progesterone in the ovaries than in the adrenal glands.
The calmer that you can keep the person, the less oxygen they use up and the more that they have a chance to live.
Hyper means overactive.
Hypo means underactive.
ACTH is adrenocorticotrophic hormone and ACTH helps the adrenal cortex to secrete hydrocortisone, corticosterone and aldosterone.
