If the child's mom is in drug and alcohol treatment to treat her drug dependency then that is a fresh and positive step. Here is what to say to the child until she gets out. Honey, your mom being on drugs isn't your fault. It's not your brother's fault and it's not your dad's fault that your mom is on drugs. You see, sometimes bad things happen to people when they are young such as sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse and they get their feelings hurt at a very young age. Then they grow up and everything seems to be all right for a while and they do the normal things like go to the prom, finish high school, get married and have children and then some major problem comes up that they just can't deal with emotionally on the inside because they've been hurt and to deal with the pain they start using drugs. I have spent enough time with you and your family to know that it wasn't your fault. In fact, when you are maybe a little older you can ask your mommy what was going on with her at the time and she will give you an honest answer. Just be sure to pray to God above that you can handle the answer before you ask the question.
